Are You Lacking Motivation For The Gym?
I’ve been an Austin personal trainer for 20 years now, and there are plenty of misconceptions and myths surrounding my profession. I’ve hear a great many of them over the years, in fact. Some stand out as ludicrous, such as the one time when I was asked to jump out of someone’s birthday cake. The other memorable one to that end was when I was told it was expected of me to go to someone’s house and collect the wallet and keys that my client had left behind on their date…in the car of that person’s wife! Thankfully, there’s also an enormous number of reasons one may pursue working with a personal trainer. People assume a personal trainer’s job is to provide motivation for client. Often times, trainers advertise that they are supreme motivators. I’m not so sure that I buy that. It just depends on how you look at it I suppose, but I certainly am not here to stand in a miniskirt and yell cheers through a bullhorn for people. The client supplies the motivation by taking the initiative to sign up with the trainer and show up at the gym. That in itself is a great start, but it is just that. A start. Trainers worth their salt will provide accountability and some ensuing motivation through encouragement, but the true motivation must lie within the client. Otherwise it’s not a relationship that’s destined to prosper or to last. Nobody can quit smoking for you. Nobody but you can convince you sufficiently that you’re strong enough to lift the weights in front of you. We can encourage you and cheer you on with kind words of assurance and reassurance, but ultimately, it comes right back to the client and their level of desire to succeed with their fitness goals. Those that are motivated to succeed, do. Those that aren’t as motivated usually don’t.
