Is It True?: Is Exercising Too Much Bad For You?
There’s a lot of preconceived notions in the health and fitness industry. Everything from certain protocols regarding nutrition, supplements, etc. There’s certainly no shortage of itemized workouts that are guaranteed to take you to the next level, and so on. One thing we don’t hear very often is the question of is exercising too much bad for you? we likely don’t hear it very often because most people tend not to exercise as vigorously as we would assume would produce dire consequences. Most people are more concerned with what detrimental effects will occur if they remain sedentary, as opposed to overdoing it.
Is exercising too much bad for you, however, is a valid question. Certainly we can draw a reasonable conclusion that there is a breaking point within everybody where the body will shut down. Thankfully, in most cases, there are plenty of systems in place to thwart the big shutdown before it can happen. On the other hand, some people have absolutely dropped dead of heart attacks from vigorous exercise.
Aside from those with a predisposition to coronary failure, is exercising too much bad for you? A new study actually suggests that it is, though only for some people. The study has concluded that white men who exercise 7.5 hours per week, or more, are more than twice as likely to suffer from arterial plaque buildup and subsequent coronary disease as compared to those that don’t push it as hard. While this study is certainly something that raises eyebrows, mine included, one must also consider the coronary risk factors that are inherent with a more sedentary lifestyle. It’s almost a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation, unless you find the middle ground.
Is exercising too much bad for you? Maybe so, for some people. Then again, too much of most things is bad for as well. Look at sugars, fats, alcohol, and so on. A little moderation can go a long way. I tell most of my clients that it’s OK to work out hard, but don’t overdo it. It’s OK to have dessert or a few drinks on occasion, but again, don’t overdo it. If you live a sensible balanced lifestyle, chances are you’ll be just fine.
