The Benefits of Coffee
Every morning, millions upon millions of people start their day off with a cup of coffee. Even the very smell of freshly brewed pot evokes a comforting and warming feeling. Walk into any coffee shop and see for yourself if you doubt what I just wrote.
Coffee naturally contains caffeine, thus contributing as to why it is such a popular drink when we need a pick me up, such as first thing in the morning. The complexity of flavors available make it stimulating mentally as well, thus waking us up further and making it that much more appealing.
Over the years, coffee has been mired in some myths and untruths, particularly those which claimed it to be harmful. For example, some people hold the belief that if they have a cup of java at noon, they will have trouble getting to sleep that night. Caffeine is flushed from your body between 4 and 7 hours after consumption, depending, of course, upon your metabolic rate and level of hydration. Another long held falsity is that coffee can stunt your growth. This was a prevalent belief back when I was a child back in the late 70’s. We know now, that is utterly ridiculous.
What we also know now, however, is that coffee packs a lot of health benefits. To clarify, I’m not talking about a Starbucks venti white chocolate mocha which contains 580 calories, 22 grams of fat, and 79 grams of sugar, which is equivalent to almost 2 cans of coke in sugar content. Rather I am talking about a simple cup of black coffee which contains zero fats and sugars and has a little under 5 calories per serving.
Recent mass studies with over 480,000 participants found that those who consumed an average of 2 to 6 cups daily, were at a lower risk of stroke, as well as other diseases, including heart failure. It has also been shown to be full of antioxidants which wards off everything from tooth cavities, to type 2 diabetes.
I am by no means suggesting that everybody should go out and drink a gallon of coffee every day. What I am stating, however, is that study after study has demonstrated unequivocally that the moderate consumption of coffee has been shown to offer a plethora of health benefits without a host of negative side effects as was once feared.
