I Can’t Lose Weight You Say?
Nothing is working they say. I’m doing everything I can they say. I’m eating right, I’m exercising, and I can’t lose weight. I have bad genetics they say. I’ve been a personal trainer in Austin for over 20 years now, as well as a gym owner for 9. I have heard every reason in the book as to why people say I can’t lose weight. Some of these reasons are valid, but if they were to go a little further, instead of stopping at the excuse, they could circumnavigate the issue. Other reasons are just people looking for a way out of doing the work.
Losing weight, like accomplishing anything else worthwhile, is very hard work. It requires dedication, sacrifice, and consistency. Just last week, a very obese man said to me that nothing works, and I can’t lose weight. A little probing of the facts revealed the answer as to why. He ate a large pizza on Friday, ate once on Saturday, and it was Tex Mex washed down with 5 sodas. Sunday was another pizza and some cookies. He didn’t drink much more than 1/3 of a gallon of water on any of those days either, not that adequate hydration would have countered his assault he waged on himself. After I pointed out the elephant in the room, he sighed and said he was just too busy to cook for himself. Anyone can justify their actions. It’s not hard to get out of taking personal responsibility for our actions. I see it all the time. It is, however, much more difficult to look yourself in the eye, so to speak, and ask yourself if you are truly giving this your best effort. It’s also much harder to get out of bed, and go exercise than to lay there. It’s much easier to give in to cravings than to have the self discipline and willpower to make consistently better choices.
This morning, the aforementioned obese man said to me the famous line of I can’t lose weight. Nothing is working he exclaimed! He explained that he ate a salad at least once over the past few days, drank more water and cut down on his soda intake a bit. It just doesn’t work he said. I can’t lose weight…I asked him if he gained all of hisweight by occasionally making poor choices at the table. I reasoned with him that if that was not the case, as it is clearly not, then how can you expect to lose the weight by occasionally making a good choice?
Consistency coupled with a fierce determination is the way to succeed in your fitness goals. Keeping a positive mindset is also a very necessary thing as well. Whether you truly have a genetic limitation, such as thyroid issues, or simply are an emotional eater, you can work around the issues if you put your mind to it, and find success. It’s fine to not be ready to undertake something difficult, but call it for what it is and you’ll have a greater chance of succeeding later on when you are truly ready.
