Having Heart at the Gym: Being Respectful & Respected

Having Heart At The Gym

Who hasn’t gone to the gym, any gym, and saw someone whose physique or strength, they admired? No one. It doesn’t matter if you are a novice or a professional bodybuilder, you’ve experienced it many times. All that anyone respects is having heart at the gym. It’s simply human nature. When you first go into a gym, you can’t help but wonder how you’ll fit in, be it socially, or where you’ll rank on the strength or validation scale as a cool person if that’s your concern. These issues don’t plague us at my gym, Austin Fitness Center

One thing I’ve stressed to my clients, is to just be yourself. You’ll never look or be seen to others, as you see yourself, and envy the cool guy in the gym. That applies to the cool guy as well. I can assure you, that he has someone to look up to. You’ll never be able to control how others perceive or accept you. There are only 2 things you can do in hopes of influencing the opinions of others. Behaving respectfully towards yourself and everyone around you, and having heart at the gym.

Most would reasonably assume that a malnourished, weak, and thin 18 year old who had just barely stepped into the gym for the first time, would be going it alone, and miserably, for that matter. That isn’t necessarily true. At my gym,, we tend to attract a different demographic than the stereotypical facility. This young man wanted nothing more than to get bigger and stronger, and he pushed every repetition of every set, to the limit. It mattered none that the 240 lb football players warmed up with more weight than he could lift on his heaviest set. All that mattered was that he was having heart at the gym.

The skinny kid pushed that weight, which to him, was every bit as heavy as the weights used by the seasoned, bigger, and stronger lifters. The big guys took notice after seeing this recurring pattern and embraced him. The fact that he was outweighed by 100 plus pounds, was irrelevant to all parties. The kid had heart. He wasn’t intimidated, and he pushed as hard as he could for every last repetition of every set just as much as the bigger guys with the bigger weights. In any gym, that garners respect.

Fast forward a few weeks, and the awkward newcomer was regularly working out with the seasoned fitness crowd. There has been many a time that I have worked out with people who were not as strong or as big as I. That mattered none, because these men and women did the best they could, and frankly, that’s inspiring to anyone.

Going to a gym is like going anywhere. You pay your way in the door and do as you please with the opportunity, no matter what obstacles are before you. Plenty of people go to the gym for all the wrong reasons, such as to make new friends, to be seen, etc. The ones who are able to ignore that nonsense and misdirection, and plow ahead with their ambitions, no matter how they feel, are the ones with heart. These are the people who succeed in their fitness goals.
