Asking Can I Lose Weight Without Dieting?
Every day, people decide they want to get in better shape. Maybe they have an aesthetic goal. Perhaps it’s just a matter of dropping a set number of pounds they are interested in doing. Other times in rehabilitative. There’s plenty of reasons and motivations, and as an Austin personal trainer for over 20 years, I’ve seen a great many of them. Some people are willing to work hard, and they usually succeed, so long as they stick with it. Other, not so much. The other morning, an overweight man in his mid 50s asked me in my gym can I lose weight without dieting?
Asking can I lose weight without dieting is akin to asking can I gain muscle without exercising. Obviously, the answer is no. I patiently explained this to the gentleman, who had no interest whatsoever in moderation or making any dietary concessions, as he himself told me so outright. He countered that he could simply exercise it away, but as I pointed out, he then will be at a caloric deficit compared to his regular routines, as he’s burning more fuel. If he doesn’t compensate by adding more fuel, he is by definition, dieting. It goes without saying that if you simply cut out a bunch of foods, good or bad, you are dieting.
As the conversation continued, he pressed on by asking can I lose weight without dieting if I take diet pills or consume energy drinks? Supplements can help, in some cases, and they can be a bad idea in many cases. In any case, they are just that. Supplements, not meal replacements. If you take them, you are dieting. If you opt for the meal replacement route, you are still dieting.
Finally, after an exhaustive 10 minutes, he again asked how can I lose weight without dieting. Seeing we were simply going around in circles, I explained the truth about losing weight. If you want to lose weight, you will have to change your lifestyle. Sure, you can drop a few pounds here or there with some gimmick or trick such as carb loading, etc, but that’s a very short lived result. If you truly want to lose weight and have it stay off for the long term, you’ll have to exercise regularly, and eat properly. Eating properly means that you will have to have the proper amount of macronutrients in every meal, as well as a proper portion size. You’ll also need to do some cardiovascular exercise on a regular basis, as well as consume enough water daily.
Can I lose weight without dieting? No you can’t. Not in any way that is healthy, or long term. If losing weight is your fitness goal, make a plan, and stick with it. That means doing what you are supposed to do even when you don’t feel like it. Before you know it, results will happen.
