Asking Yourself Why Am I Fat?
I had a rather amusing email land in my inbox the other day. It was from a young lady whom I have never met and she simply asked, why am I fat? Granted, I make myself readily available on such websites as quora, etc, and it’s not too hard to find me if you look for my gym, or Google me on this site that you are reading right now. That said, as a longtime personal trainer in Austin, I get my fair share of questions. As with everything, some are very intellectually stimulating, and others, tend to lean more toward the silly side.
Why am I fat you ask? Quite honestly, I have no idea. I’ve never met you, I know nothing about your genetics, your medical background, your family’s history, what you eat, what you do, or what your occupation is. By gosh, I don’t even know how old you are! As easy as it is to lambaste someone for asking a silly question, let’s just assume in the spirit of goodness and respect for one another, that this person asking me the question of why am I fat, was simply assuming I would have a magical answer as I’ve been a personal trainer for over two decades now.
If you’re going to ask me why am I fat, but not give me any information to go on, I will have to ask you any number of questions in order to get the proper answer to you. As I mentioned previously, I would need to know exactly what this person eats, when they eat it, how old they are, what kind of genetic predispositions run rampant in their bloodlines, how much exercise they get and what they do for exercise every week, etcetera, etcetera.
Barring medical issues, and the onset of predetermined genetic components that have set in, the answer to the why am I fat question can usually be ascertained by looking at ones nutrition, as well as their frequency, or in frequency of cardiovascular exercise. Even if you have a pre-determined genetic disposition, in your opinion anyway, to be heavy, you can certainly circumnavigate that by employing proper nutrition which you time methodically throughout the day, coupled with perfectly timed and adequate cardiovascular exercise.
Why am I fat you ask? It’s likely because you are not taking the proper steps to not be fat. As simple and as stupid of an answer as that is, without any kind of a background and catalog of information about the specific client, that’s the best you are going to get if we are going to keep it realistic. We could make sweeping statements, generalizations, and loads of assumptions, but that’s rather useless and ultimately, a waste of everyone’s time. In the grand scheme of things, however, to just simply ask me why am I fat, can’t get you anything more than a speculative answer, and if someone does provide you with an exact answer, under the same conditions of unknown quantities and qualities, they are selling you snake oil. Instead of asking random people on the internet why am I fat, perhaps you should book a consultation with a qualified and experienced personal trainer, and ask them this question face to face, whereupon you can have an in-depth conversation and discuss all the variables, as well as the factors that lead you to the obesity that you are experiencing. This is the only way that you will ever get and honest, and informative answer.
