Shunning Negativity and Embracing the Power of Positive Thinking

Within the realm of the fitness world, there is no shortage of advice. There are many hundreds, or even thousands of techniques which trump all the rest, according to their proponents anyway. There are many supplements that will turn you into a Greek God for only $39.95 when consumed with a glass of water, of course. And naturally, there are many diets which you are foolish to not adhere to, as they are the missing link between you and your immortality as a fitness icon and legend. There certainly are nutritional requirements, guidelines, and of course, there is plenty of science behind it. There’s also plenty of science behind the physiology of movement and how it pertains directly to our anatomy, as well as our anatomical imbalances. The one thing, however, we don’t hear much of in the fitness world, is the power of positive thinking.

A negative mindset will more than likely end up delivering negative results. Anything that is worth attaining, is worth working for, and if you start with a negative mindset, you are more than likely to never achieve whatever your goals are. Your goal,, whether it be within the world of fitness and health, the ascension to a political office, or to learn how to play an instrument, must be approached with not just consistency, but also positive energy and a degree of optimism if you truly want to succeed.

In the 20 years that I’ve been an Austin personal trainer, I’ve seen countless people tell me there’s no way they can do something. Comically enough, they’re telling me this often times while they are actually doing it. For example, if I ask a client to perform 10 repetitions of a simple bicep curl, they will occasionally balk initially, as it’s too heavy. Once they begin the movement and start powering through the reps, they will sometimes say that 10 is impossible… meanwhile, still clicking off the reps with no slowing down. The energy wasted on the negativity and self doubt is better spent on positive energy in line with the attainment of their goals.

If you were going to paint a picture, you would have to see it in your head before you could put it on paper, no matter if you are a napkin doodler, or an accomplished professional artist. Likewise, if you are going to perform a set of however many repetitions successfully, you must visualize not only your technique, but the successful completion of doing so.

Negativity is a waste of energy that could have been directed towards the completion of a goal. Positive energy, however, requires virtually no effort at all. I’ve often said that the people who spend so much time and energy coming up with rationalizations, excuses, and justifications for not working out, or even completing any goal for that matter, would be far along towards the completion of that goal and they use that energy towards it as opposed to trying to short circuit their own success.

Very rarely in this life do you get somewhere by accident. Virtually never, however, will you achieve a worthwhile goal without trying your best, planning it out, and visualizing the successful completion of it. Just saying no to negativity, and utilize the power of positive thinking!
