Elementary School Wellness Day Was Awesome!
Today was a fun day for me. My kid’s elementary school had what they called Wellness Day today and they had asked me to be a presenter as I’m a local gym owner and have been an Austin personal trainer for nearly 20 years. I’m a rather known quantity at the school as well because I’ve been reading every week to my kid’s classes as well as helping teach the kindergarteners how to read, etc for the past 3 years as well as counting several of the teachers as personal training clients.
The format of the day was that I was given a room and a class would come by for 20 minutes and I as interactively as possible, teach the kids about muscles. This was to include the cardiac as well as the skeletal muscles as well. Throw in some nutrition, and you have a bona fide lecture from the guy the kids have called “Captain Meathead” for the past 3 years.
When you’ve been an Austin personal trainer for as many years as I have, you get very comfortable improvising and being quick on your feet so I just had a loose plan and would simply wing it based on the energy of the room and state of their little attention spans. There was quite a bit of energy as one might expect from second graders so it made perfect sense to not only learn a few things, but to do them as well. The kids were doing modified pushups, sit ups, planks, balancing exercises, etc. They found it to be challenging yet fun. It was fun for me as well because when you can make a child happy and feel like you made a positive difference to them on any scale, it’s a very good feeling.
Thanks to the school for inviting me and I look forward to doing it again next year!
